Come Pray: Transformation
Acts 2:1-13

This Sunday was Pentecost. This is the day when we celebrate the Holy Spirit and his coming. In Acts 2:1-13 we see the Holy Spirit come to his church as Jesus said he would. Jesus says that it is better that the Holy Spirit is with us because he will help us, convict us, and guide us. God has chosen to work through his Spirit to transform us as individual people and the world. The Holy Spirit is what we need most to be changed. He is key to this resurrected life.

Heather Thomas of Imago Dei Community preaches on prayer out of Luke 18:1-14. In this sermon we look at prayers that cry out to God in humility. These can be desperate pleas for help, for mercy, for hope. In these two parables we start by seeing an unjust judge giving a widow mercy. If an unjust judge will do this, how much more will our loving God take care of us? In the second parable, Jesus uses this story to both speak out again self-righteousness and show how much he values a heart that cries out to God in humility. These stories point to prayer being an awareness of the company of God.

Come Pray: Evangelism
Matthew 28:16-20 & John 3:16

As we continue in our Come Pray series, Kyle teaches on evangelism. This topic can be difficult for our culture and our community. We’ve often seen this abused, yet that doesn’t change God’s heart to see those he loves come to know him. If evangelism is sharing good news, this life changing news that calls all of creation into a deep love with God, why don’t we share it more readily? We must first believe that this is good news. In this call there is no condemnation. This call brings us into a life of freedom and this is the best thing for the world.

Come Pray – Psalm 32

As we continue in our Come Pray series, Kyle preaches on repentance out of Psalm 32. Our culture doesn’t value repentance, and we often view repentance as a negative. Scripture makes it clear that we are guilty of sin and this is something we need to recognize, but we are freed from this shame. Repentance is a call to come back into right relationship with God.

Howie Smith preaches out of 1st Samuel on Hannah’s Prayer. Here we see a woman who is broken and desperate for something, and she cries out to God for help. This cry for help is messy; there’s nothing polished or polite about it. This prayer is desperate. When God answers Hannah with giving her a son, she worships deeply. In her prayer, Hannah sees God’s provision and blessing.

Numbers 6:22-27

Blessing is a prevalent part of scripture, yet in our culture this idea is somewhat foreign. In this sermon we discuss what it means to be blessed by God. The blessing Moses is commanded to speak out over the people is more than just a nicety. This blessing has authority and is rooted in our relational God’s desire to know his people.

This week we celebrated the Resurrected Christ. Easter is our high holiday because this is when our God rose from death. Resurrection changes everything. After that “dark night of the soul” on Good Friday when we wrestle with what it means to worship a King that died for our sins, hope can feel lost. Yet we see the followers of Jesus become elated when Jesus does what he always said he would do, rise again. This is the life our King calls us into, a resurrection life. We are marked by this moment in history that changed everything, that defeated death and frees God’s people. We celebrate this reality.

In this Psalm we see the goodness and purpose of work. Everyone works. But what does it mean to work as followers of Christ? We often view work between two extremes, over emphasize work or we hate work, but scripture calls us to a third way of viewing work. Rest is always key in how we approach the topic of work. This Psalm says that the Lord gives sleep to his beloved; rest is a good thing that speaks of the freedom that is found in Christ. The key in all this is relationship. We might produce a product, and we should do so with excellence, but what lasts is relationship. How do we serve, love, and value others in and through our work?
