Are you interested in helping to serve at Missio? There are a lot of areas to do so and this is a great way to get connected.

Prayer
Prayer is central to the life of the church. We have people who are available to pray with during communion every Sunday. We’re setting up teams to pray before our worship gathering for our time together that day, our house churches, and our city. Communion prayer is once every two months and pre-service prayer is once a month.

Setup and teardown
Every Sunday it takes a setup team and a teardown team to make our worship gathering happen. Setup folks show up at 8:15 and put everything in place. Donuts and bagels are a huge perk of setting up. The teardown teams start once our service ends, and it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to pack everything up. These are both once a month commitments.

Greeters
If you enjoy meeting and engaging new folks, this is a fantastic way to use your gifts. Hospitality always makes new people feel welcome and we value this as a church. Greeters show up to the Guesthouse Ballroom at 10am on Sundays and are the first people to welcome everyone to our time of worship. This is a once a month commitment.

Missio Kids
We need volunteers for all ages (birth to 5th grade) in Missio Kids. If you love spending time with kids, this is a great way to serve the community. This is a once a month commitment.

If you are interested in serving in any of these roles or have any questions, please email jessica@missiodeislc.com.

Acts 2:1-13

This Sunday was Pentecost. This is the day when we celebrate the Holy Spirit and his coming. In Acts 2:1-13 we see the Holy Spirit come to his church as Jesus said he would. Jesus says that it is better that the Holy Spirit is with us because he will help us, convict us, and guide us. God has chosen to work through his Spirit to transform us as individual people and the world. The Holy Spirit is what we need most to be changed. He is key to this resurrected life.

We’ve started a Pastor’s blog which will be updated weekly. This can be found on the website here: missiodeislc.com/category/pastors-blog/

To view this week’s blog, please click here.

New to Missio Lunch this Sunday
If you’re new to Missio, we invite you to join us for lunch this Sunday, May 19th, a half hour after the worship service. This will take place in the City Creek room just down the hall (where the kids meet). This will be a time to hear about the vision of Missio, answer any questions you may have, and get connected with some folks. Drinks and sandwiches will be provided.

Conflict Management Class
You are invited to a class on conflict management on June 15th from 9am to 2pm at the Missio Community Space. In This class Tuesday Roby will lead us into understanding why conflict exists, different principles of conflict management, how to be aware of your feelings and motives as well as those of others, and how to seek resolution. This class is meant to help equip people for dealing with normal conflict in life in a healthy and God honoring manner. Seating for this class is limited, so please RSVP to lucas@missiodeislc.com.

Mini-Workshop this Sunday
Wenda Fry (mother of Adrian Fry) is an ordained pastor and perceptive counselour. She will be back in SLC next weekend and would love to offer a “Mini-Workshop” from 1:30 to 5 pm Sunday afternoon if anyone is interested. If you feel hopeless in a relationship, frustrated at your job, or just simply tired of the same old fights with a friend, why not give yourself a break and go to this Mini-Workshop? Here is what Carol Lim said about the April 14th experience:

“I was amazed at how we were vessels for the truth, and how it unfolded right before our eyes. I appreciated how you took us to a new place, to a new perspective, and where you left each of us at the end. I have a great deal of hope.”

Call Wenda at 402-679-7587 or email her at wendafry@gmail.com if you are interested.

Volunteers Needed
We’re in need of volunteers for a number of areas including kids, setup and teardown, calls to worship, bread makers for communion, and prayer teams. Sign ups are in the back at the information table on Sundays, or you can email info@missiodeislc.com for more information.

Classes & Book Study Leaders
Are you interested in teaching a class or leading a book study here at Missio? We’ll be offering classes soon, and want to hear from you. If you would like to teach please email kyle@missiodeislc.com to set up a time to discuss your ideas. If you would like to lead a book study we want to hear from you as well. We have a list of books complete with study guides/discussion questions. To talk through ideas, email lucas@missiodeislc.com.

Homeless and Red Light Outreach Needs
Sunday mornings we have bins for donations that go towards the work Joel Hunt is a part of at the Fourth Street Clinic. Thank you all so much for your donations, many people have been and are being helped. Our homeless friends needs are now more warm/hot weather focused. Thanks again for your help.

Heather Thomas of Imago Dei Community preaches on prayer out of Luke 18:1-14. In this sermon we look at prayers that cry out to God in humility. These can be desperate pleas for help, for mercy, for hope. In these two parables we start by seeing an unjust judge giving a widow mercy. If an unjust judge will do this, how much more will our loving God take care of us? In the second parable, Jesus uses this story to both speak out again self-righteousness and show how much he values a heart that cries out to God in humility. These stories point to prayer being an awareness of the company of God.

From Kyle:

This week’s blog is short and simple. Three things. First I am really excited that this weekend Heather Thomas, a pastor from Imago Dei Community, will be joining us to teach on the Lord’s Prayer. I had the pleasure of serving alongside Heather on Imago Dei’s staff and learned a great deal from her in those years. I love hearing her preach and getting to hear her speak on the Lord’s Prayer is something that I am anticipating greatly for our community…

Ecclesia and Ethics Conference
Ecclesia and Ethics will be holding an upcoming conference that will be taking place entirely online. The theme of the conference is Moral Formation and the Church, and will feature such speakers as N.T. Wright, Shane Claiborne, Michael Gorman.

It will be taking place Saturday May 18 and Saturday May 25, 8AM to 5PM MST. Rory and Amy will be hosting the event at their place: 646 E 1700 S #10, Salt Lake City, UT. Registration is a suggested minimum donation of $10, which will go toward a ministry that Missio Dei is involved in. The organizers of the conference have allowed for this because they “are seeking to make the conference itself an exercise of Christian ethical praxis, and a communal participation in the work of the Kingdom through the activity of Cruciform love toward the world, for the life of the world, and to the glory of God through the Church.” More information about the conference can be found here. You can also find interviews with the presenters at this link. This conference will be a great way to engage in the theology of the church with some greatly gifted theologians without the high cost and travel.

Please email Rory if you have any questions: rjvmurphy@gmail.com

Pastors Blog May 7th

This week’s blog is short and simple. Three things. First I am really excited that this weekend Heather Thomas, a pastor from Imago Dei Community, will be joining us to teach on the Lord’s Prayer. I had the pleasure of serving alongside Heather on Imago Dei’s staff and learned a great deal from her in those years. I love hearing her preach and getting to hear her speak on the Lord’s Prayer is something that I am anticipating greatly for our community.

Second, this weekend we will also get to hear from our Missio Kid’s Director, Emily Cox, on how we can spend time with the kids in our community this summer. It’s crazy, but each week we have around forty people (students and teachers) in Missio Kids who are studying the bible and getting to know each other.

Finally, each week I see new faces and want to make sure there are outlets for them to find out who we are and what we are about at Missio Dei. So beginning this month (May 19th) I want to set aside one Sunday a month where anyone who is new to Missio can hear the history, vision, and values of our community. Following our Worship Gathering we will gather in the City Creek room for sodas and sandwiches and discussion. If you are or know someone who is new to Missio please plan on joining.

I look forward to this week in our House Churches as well as continuing our discussion on prayer this Sunday. If you get a moment congratulate Shannon on her baptism and urge your HC’s to continue the discussion on evangelism.

Godspeed,

Kyle

Matthew 28:16-20 & John 3:16

As we continue in our Come Pray series, Kyle teaches on evangelism. This topic can be difficult for our culture and our community. We’ve often seen this abused, yet that doesn’t change God’s heart to see those he loves come to know him. If evangelism is sharing good news, this life changing news that calls all of creation into a deep love with God, why don’t we share it more readily? We must first believe that this is good news. In this call there is no condemnation. This call brings us into a life of freedom and this is the best thing for the world.

I have to say that I was pretty blown away by last Sunday. The power that is found in humility and confession is quite rare and quite beautiful.
Repentance and Evangelism…
I have to say that I was pretty blown away by last Sunday. The power that is found in humility and confession is quite rare and quite beautiful. I talked with several of you who prayed with and for one another and I left feeling like this could be the beginning of a great foundation for our community.

I say foundation because I think that this is really just the starting point. Confession with and to each other and prayers of repentance offered to God should be day to day language for the Jesus follower. As worshipful as our gathering was, I have to think that the House Churches will be even more intimate and honest. Don’t let your personal discussions drift into the safe and mundane. Rather discuss repentance but also practice repentance. Do it alone and do it as a community. Look up different stories of confession, repentance, and forgiveness in scripture and let it lead you.

Thank you all for handling a topic and idea, that can be very difficult to digest, with such grace and engagement. I do believe that if it is the foundation of who we are we will only look more and more like the church God calls us to be.

This week…
This week the heavy conversations don’t stop. As we move along in our series Come Pray we will hit prayers of evangelism. We will be looking at the Great Commission, The Great Commandment, John 3:16 and 1 Timothy to discuss just what it looks like for us to be a church that lives evangelism. In preparation feel free to read, study, and pray through those passages. Also, ask yourself how you see evangelism influencing your life as a Jesus follower? Do you share your faith often? Do you see value in sharing your faith? Do you see how evangelism benefits you at all? Each one of those questions we will hit on Sunday.

Request for prayers…
In final preparation for our gathering this weekend, will you please be in prayer for those in our midst who don’t follow Jesus. Will you pray that they respond to the opportunity to follow him. Will you pray that as a church we will embrace those who trust their lives to Christ. Will you pray that all of our hearts are soft and ears are open.

Will you also pray for those throughout our country and globe who are starting new churches. This week I am spending most of the week in New York City with the Orchard Group. We are working to tell the story of church planting and recruit others who would join us in this mission.

Thank you Missio Dei! It’s a pleasure to serve with you.
