Jesus is the good portion. Our initial reaction to this text is not to find rest in Jesus, but to compare ourselves to Mary and Martha. And from that, we try to be like Mary. This passage of scripture doesn’t call you to be like Mary. That’s not the point. Yes, there are things you can learn both Mary and Martha, but Luke is more concerned with you seeing the value and worth of Jesus.

Jesus calls his disciples to feed a crowd of 5,000 with only enough food for one person. Jesus is always calling us to do thing that we can’t do without him. And he always provides and satisfies.

Missio Kids Volunteer Training THIS SATURDAY
Reminder to all MK volunteers AND those interested in volunteering!! There will be an important training this Saturday, February 4th from 10 AM to noon at the community space (170 E. 1st Ave).  If you’re still considering the possibility of serving in Missio Kids please feel free to attend this training or email stefanie@missiodeislc.com

Super Bowl Bash
Everyone is invited to the community space for the Super Bowl! The grill will be hot at 4 and the game starts at 4:30.  Bring something to throw on the grill and your favorite “football party” side to share.  Soda, ice, plates, and napkins will be provided!

Gospel Defined (Men’s Breakfast)
Beginning THIS FRIDAY morning, the men of Missio Dei will gather the on the first Friday of the month to share breakfast, get to know each other more, and dig into scripture to see how responsibly we are communicating.  The gathering will be led by Jeremy Cox and Kyle Costello and will be held at the community space.  We’ll start with breakfast at 6 AM and will begin our discussion at 6:30 AM.  We’ll wrap up by 7:30 for those that need to get to work.

Haiti Trip Blog

Night of Prayer and Story
Join us next Thursday, February 9th for our Night of Prayer and Story.  We will gather to pray for those traveling to Haiti, for God’s direction on how our community might engage there, and for the country in general. (6:30 PM at the community space).

Valentine’s Day dinner to fight human trafficking
Love 146 (www.love146.org) is working toward to abolition of child sex slavery and exploitation.  You are invited to attend a Valentine’s Day dinner complete with music and education about fighting human trafficking on February 14th at 7 PM at Sandy Ridge Community Church.  Tickets are $40/couple or $20/person.  All proceeds will benefit Love 146 and childcare will be provided! God is telling his story. When times are good and our hearts are full, we forget about God. We either intentionally or unintentionally believe we don’t need him, we just need ourselves and our skill. He uses the story of a prostitute and a faithful husband to show his consistent love for us in the face of our unfaithfulness.

Night of Prayer and Story: Date Changed to February 9th
This month’s night of prayer and story will be centered around Missio Dei’s upcoming trip to and future involvement in Haiti.  We will be able to spend the evening in prayer and worship alongside the folks from our community who will be leaving for Haiti the next day.  We hope you can join us!

Super Bowl Bash
Everyone is invited February 5th to the Hillcrest Space for a Super Bowl Bash.  The game starts around 4:30 but we will fire up the grill around 4.  If you do come please bring something to throw on a the grill and your favorite “football party” side to share with others.  Soda, ice, plates, napkins, and  hot grill will be provided!  Feel free to invite your friends!

As Christ followers we use all kinds of words that we may or may not pay a lot of attention to.  We’ll throw out words like Gospel or Calling and expect others to either understand them or to understand our definition of them.  These terms become a type of accepted “church” slang and can soon depart from any type of meaning that relates to scripture.  This can have a drastic effect on our relationships with our neighbors, our families, our friends, and even interpersonally.  Beginning in February we (the Men of Missio Dei) will gather on the first Friday of every month to share breakfast, get to know one another more, and dig into scripture to see how responsibly we are communicating.  The gathering will be led by Jeremy Cox and Kyle Costello and will be held at the Hillcrest Space. Jesus reconciled his followers to his Father. He lived a life of reconciliation and calls us to do the same. It’s not easy. Our pasts are challenging and sometimes less than ideal.

The Avenues House Church will be meeting at the Missio Dei Community Space (170 E. 1st Ave.) this week (January 8th). We’ll be back at the Weiseth house the following week, January 15th.

Monday Night Pipes
Men of Missio Dei Community, you are invited to Nash’s house on January 23rd from 6:30-9 PM for “Monday Night Pipes.”  It will be a time for the fellas to hang out, smoke pipes, get to know each other, and pray together.  Please bring a snack and/or drink to share and email nash@nashmartinez.com for more information.

Holding Out HELP
Holding Out HELP has asked for some volunteers to help make their fundraiser/awareness night on Saturday, March 3rd a success.  This local organization is working tirelessly to serve individuals and families desiring to leave polygamist communities, and at this time, especially those considering leaving or being forced to leave the FLDS community in Colorado City, AZ.  

The organization is in need of volunteers to help out in any of the following areas: Food, Ticket Sales, Marketing, Silent Auction, and Decorations.

Christmas Eve
Our Christmas Eve service will be held at 5:00 PM at the Post Theater.  There will be childcare available for children through age 5.  There will be no corporate worship gathering on Christmas Day.

Advent Conspiracy Offering
This Sunday, as well as the first Sunday in January, will be another opportunity to participate in our Advent Conspiracy offering.  Along with our weekly offering, we will be taking a special Advent offering that will go directly to provide clean water to those without it, assistance to men, women, and children looking to leave polygamist communities throughout Utah, and to our community Haiti initiative.

Holding Out HELP Volunteer Opportunity
As the FLDS community in Colorado City, AZ is experiencing some serious turmoil, it is critical that Holding Out HELP has a successful fundraiser/ awareness night on Saturday, March 3rd.  They are asking for donations of items that can be auctioned off, as well as volunteers to serve in the following areas (each area will have a head volunteer and a team to work with):

Food: prep, display, serving, clean-up
Tickets: sales, tracking tables
Marketing: design of tickets and posters, delivery of tickets to local churches
Silent Auction: recruiting items, packaging, pricing, preparing bidder sheets
Decorations: set up, tear down
