New to Missio Lunch this Sunday
If you’re new to Missio, we invite you to join us for lunch this Sunday, May 19th, a half hour after the worship service. This will take place in the City Creek room just down the hall (where the kids meet). This will be a time to hear about the vision of Missio, answer any questions you may have, and get connected with some folks. Drinks and sandwiches will be provided.

Conflict Management Class
You are invited to a class on conflict management on June 15th from 9am to 2pm at the Missio Community Space. In This class Tuesday Roby will lead us into understanding why conflict exists, different principles of conflict management, how to be aware of your feelings and motives as well as those of others, and how to seek resolution. This class is meant to help equip people for dealing with normal conflict in life in a healthy and God honoring manner. Seating for this class is limited, so please RSVP to lucas@missiodeislc.com.

Mini-Workshop this Sunday
Wenda Fry (mother of Adrian Fry) is an ordained pastor and perceptive counselour. She will be back in SLC next weekend and would love to offer a “Mini-Workshop” from 1:30 to 5 pm Sunday afternoon if anyone is interested. If you feel hopeless in a relationship, frustrated at your job, or just simply tired of the same old fights with a friend, why not give yourself a break and go to this Mini-Workshop? Here is what Carol Lim said about the April 14th experience:

“I was amazed at how we were vessels for the truth, and how it unfolded right before our eyes. I appreciated how you took us to a new place, to a new perspective, and where you left each of us at the end. I have a great deal of hope.”

We’re in need of volunteers for a number of areas including kids, setup and teardown, calls to worship, bread makers for communion, and prayer teams. Sign ups are in the back at the information table on Sundays, or you can email info@missiodeislc.com for more information.

Classes & Book Study Leaders
Are you interested in teaching a class or leading a book study here at Missio? We’ll be offering classes soon, and want to hear from you. If you would like to teach please email kyle@missiodeislc.com to set up a time to discuss your ideas. If you would like to lead a book study we want to hear from you as well. We have a list of books complete with study guides/discussion questions. To talk through ideas, email lucas@missiodeislc.com.

Sunday mornings we have bins for donations that go towards the work Joel Hunt is a part of at the Fourth Street Clinic. Thank you all so much for your donations, many people have been and are being helped. Our homeless friends needs are now more warm/hot weather focused. Thanks again for your help.

I had the pleasure of serving alongside Heather on Imago Dei’s staff and learned a great deal from her in those years. I love hearing her preach and getting to hear her speak on the Lord’s Prayer is something that I am anticipating greatly for our community…

Ecclesia and Ethics Conference
Ecclesia and Ethics will be holding an upcoming conference that will be taking place entirely online. The theme of the conference is Moral Formation and the Church, and will feature such speakers as N.T. Wright, Shane Claiborne, Michael Gorman.

It will be taking place Saturday May 18 and Saturday May 25, 8AM to 5PM MST. Rory and Amy will be hosting the event at their place: 646 E 1700 S #10, Salt Lake City, UT. Registration is a suggested minimum donation of $10, which will go toward a ministry that Missio Dei is involved in. The organizers of the conference have allowed for this because they “are seeking to make the conference itself an exercise of Christian ethical praxis, and a communal participation in the work of the Kingdom through the activity of Cruciform love toward the world, for the life of the world, and to the glory of God through the Church.” More information about the conference can be found here. You can also find interviews with the presenters at this link. This conference will be a great way to engage in the theology of the church with some greatly gifted theologians without the high cost and travel.

Hello Missio Dei Community,
I want to start a weekly practice of writing on this blog and weekly update to hopefully make communication of information a little more relational and holistic. Sometimes it will be written, sometimes video, and sometimes (like this week) both. I know that some of you will always read it, others will sometimes read it, and some never read it. I don’t plan on it being anything ground breaking or Pulitzer worthy, rather I want it to be a way to communicate what is happening in specific parts of the community to the community as a whole and be a reference for those of you who want to know what is coming up in our weekly gatherings etc… If you are looking for cutting edge commentary or the 10 best dresses from the Grammy’s you might be disappointed.

Cru is hosting their annual Fellowship Dessert on April 28th at Gourmandise Bakery. Come enjoy some desserts from Gourmandise, and hear students and faculty share stories of how God has worked this year on the college campuses in Utah, and hear of how you can partner with the ministry by giving finacially to help them continue reaching college students with the gospel, building them in their faith, and equipping them to be sent as Christ-centered laborers for a lifetime. Everyone is invited, feel free to bring friends.

Spring Workshop on Family Relationships
Spring Workshop: There is still room in Wenda Fry’s (Adrian’s mom) Workshop next Sunday, April 14! It is for individuals or couples and covers issues related to health, family, career, illness or relationships. Wenda will teach about the unique approach called Family Constellations which has nothing to do with stars or astrology, but about the attitudes or standings we inherit when we are born into a family. Tear Down Volunteers Needed
We need some more folks to serve on Sundays, specifically with tear down. This includes tearing down everything from the stage to the kid’s area and typically means staying for about an hour after church is over. Please email Jessica@missiodeislc.com if you’re interested.

Volunteers Needed Today & Tomorrow
Volunteers of America needs some extra help this week. They are reopening their Adult Detox center and could use some extra hands helping get things in order before they can open beds up to patients. If you are able to help, just come down to the center located at 252 W Brooklyn Ave (3W and 1025S). The best time is today and tomorrow (Thursday & Friday) from 9-4ish. Simple let them know that you’re with missio dei and ask for Gina. If you have any questions, please email Kelley Caruso at kelleycaruso@gmail.com

Jr. High Group
The Jr. High group will be meeting this week, the first Sunday of February. They will meet up in the lobby at the 5 minute break. If you have any questions, please contact Cat Rogers at catryono@gmail.com

Ash Wednesday Worship
On Wednesday, February 13th, we will hold a night of worship and reflection. This will be a time for us to come together and think about what it means to enter the season of Lent with intention. This will be held at the missio community space at 6:30pm.

Pipe Night
Men of Missio Dei Community, you are invited to Nash’s house on February 11th from 6:30-9:30 PM for “Monday Night Pipes”. It will be a time for the fellas to hang out, smoke pipes, get to know each other, and pray together. Please bring a snack and/or drink to share and email nash@nashmartinez.com for more information.

Homeless Outreach Needs
Sunday mornings we have bins for donations that go towards the work Joel Hunt is a part of at the Fourth Street Clinic. The needs are:
- Prayer
- Hand warmers
- Sleeping bags
- Tents
- Socks
- Soft individually wrapped snacks (cereal bars, fruit leather, etc.)
- Backpacks (day packs, school back packs, and backpacking packs)
- Gloves

Our Christmas Eve service will be at 6pm this year.  We will spend our time of worship: singing, praying, reading scripture, celebrating and  responding to the Birth of Christ.  We will be discussing what it means to respond to God’s gift at Christmas in full bodied worship and how that affects our relationship with Jubilee – Haiti, the neglected of our city, and those who live daily without clean water.  Any and everyone is welcome to join us at the University Guest House (110 Fort Douglas Blvd. Salt Lake City, UT 84113) as we conclude our Advent series “The Birth of I Am.”

Advent: the Birth of I Am

This Sunday we will begin our celebration of Advent as a community. This is a time where we look at God coming in the flesh, entering our world, the Birth of I Am.

Make Light

Join Nash Martinez December 1st as he hosts a conversation about making light – literally. This is an all ages hands on workshop where participants can build their own personalized pendant light to keep or give away. Participants may also bring their own projects to work on or assist Nash in assembling pieces that are already in process at his workshop. All lights made/worked on will be displayed the following day for our first Advent Service: “Jesus: Light of the World”. There’s no cost to participate, but a donation is suggested if you desire to make a personalized pendant for yourself. All donations received will go toward the Missio Dei Community Advent offering. Each donation will be matched up to $1,000 and donated to Living Water International. Kids are encouraged to come but need supervision! Please RSVP as soon as possible to nash@nashmartinez.com. This will take place at 10am at C.G. Sparks. The address is 454 South 500 West.

Homeless Outreach Donations

You all are wonderful! Thank you so much for the donations, more than I would have ever expected. The expressions of gratitude from those who receive your gifts are many. Warm feet, a warm night, a snack they can eat that doesn’t hurt their gums or teeth, something to be able to carry their possessions, all these and more are very appreciated. I have changed the list up a little to reflect more of the real-time needs:

- Socks
- Backpacks
- Sleeping bags
- Toenail clippers
- Shoes/boots – sizes commonly seen are mens 10-12. Waterproof are highly valued.
- Tents
- Tarps
- Soft cereal bars – for people who have few or no teeth
-A microwave is needed for a person who just got off the street

Beth Moore Study: December Meeting Canceled

The ladies’ Beth Moore Bible Study will not be meeting in December, but will resume January 5th. This will take place the first Saturday of every month at the Missio community space from 9am to 11am. Please email locke.kates@gmail.com with any questions.

Deacons 101

What does scripture say about the role of Deacons in a church and a city? Join Kyle Costello for a 4 week discussion on the necessary role of deacons in a church. This class is suggested for anyone interested in learning about the role of deacons and is mandatory for anyone who is interested in becoming a deacon of Missio Dei. The first week of the class has already passed, but if you can make it this week you are still welcome to join. The class meets on Sunday mornings from 8:30 to 9:30. Location is the Alpine Room.

Job Opportunity: We are currently looking for an Administrative Assistant.  We need someone who can work 20 hours a week Sunday through Thursday.  Applicant must be experienced in word and excel, have experience maintaining multiple schedules/calendars, be flexible in hours required, and be skilled in working with people both inside and outside the community.  We will be accepting resumes through October 31st.  If you are interested please email your resume to jessica@missiodeislc.com.

NEW SUNDAY MEETING SPACE: THIS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7TH
Starting this Sunday we will be meeting in the Guesthouse Ballroom, instead of the Post Theater. The Guesthouse is located north of the Post Theater at 110 Fort Douglas Boulevard. Follow the signs for parking to the west side of the building. Missio Kids will also be meeting in the Guesthouse.

Missio Dei Community Vision Night
Please join us TOMORROW EVENING, October 4th at 6:30 PM at the Post Chapel for a community discussion surrounding the next year. The focus will be on leadership, finances, mission, and discipleship. If you call MDC your church home you are urged to attend. 

Homeless Outreach Donations
Thank you all for your donations to the homeless outreach bins. They have gone to some very thankful people.  Joel has asked his homeless friends directly what they need and this is what they’ve answered:

- Socks, socks, and more socks
– Backpacks – day pack or school packs
– Sleeping bags
– Toenail clippers – the kind without the sharp file

- Granola bars
– Soft cereal bars – for people who have few or no teeth
– Hard candy

The bins will be in the lobby on Sundays to collect your donations.

MADE: Music
MADE: Music with Josh Rosenthal will be on Tuesday, October 16. You don’t have to be a musician or songwriter to come to this. We’ll be talking songwriting, production, self-expression and creative stewardship all under the umbrella of worship. More details to come.

Missio Indoor Soccer Team
We need more ladies!  Any women interested in playing on a co-ed indoor soccer team (on Tuesday nights starting in Oct.), please contact Steph Walzer at steph.lamont1@gmail.com.
